چکیده

A d-contraction is a d-tuple (T1, . . . , Td) of mutually commuting operators acting on a common Hilbert space H such that ‖T1ξ1 + T2ξ2 + · · ·+ Tdξd‖ 2 ≤ ‖ξ1‖ 2 + ‖ξ2‖ 2 + · · ·+ ‖ξd‖ 2 for all ξ1, ξ2, . . . , ξd ∈ H. These are the higher dimensional counterparts of contractions. We show that many of the operator-theoretic aspects of function theory in the unit disk generalize to the unit ball Bd in complex d-space, including von Neumann’s inequality and the model theory of contractions. These results depend on properties of the d-shift, a distinguished d-contraction which acts on a new H space associated with Bd, and which is the higher dimensional counterpart of the unilateral shift. H 2 and the d-shift are highly unique. Indeed, by exploiting the noncommutative Choquet boundary of the d-shift relative to its generated C∗-algebra we find that there is more uniqueness in dimension d ≥ 2 than there is in dimension one.

C*-algebras on r-discrete Abelian Groupoids

We study certain function algebras and their operator algebra completions on r-discrete abelian groupoids, the corresponding conditional expectations, maximal abelian subalgebras (masa) and eigen-functionals. We give a semidirect product decomposition for an abelian groupoid. This is done through a matched pair and leads to a C*-diagonal (for a special case). We use this decomposition to study ...

Geometry of the Unit Ball and Representation Theory for Operator Algebras

We investigate the relationship between the facial structure of the unit ball of an operator algebra A and its algebraic structure, including the hereditary subalgebras and the socle of A. Many questions about the facial structure of A are studied with the aid of representation theory. For that purpose we establish the existence of reduced atomic type representations for certain nonselfadjoint ...

Algebraic orders on K0 and approximately finite operator algebras, J. Operator Th., to appear . 51 S.C. Power, On the outer automorphism groups of triangular alternation limit algebras

Approximately finite (AF) C *-algebras are classified by approximately finite (r-discrete principal) groupoids. Certain natural triangular subalgebras of AF C *-algebras are similarly classified by triangular subsemigroupoids of AF groupoids [10]. Putting this in a more intuitive way, such subalgebras A are classified by the topologised fundamental binary relation R(A) induced on the Gelfand sp...

Homology for Operator Algebras II : Stable Homology for Non-self-adjoint Algebras

A new homology is defined for a non-self-adjoint operator algebra with a distinguished masa which is based upon cycles and boundaries associated with complexes of partial isometries in the stable algebra. Under natural hypotheses the zeroth order group coincides with the K0 group of the generated C ∗-algebra. Several identifications and applications are given, and in particular it is shown how ...

Cartan Subalgebras in C*-Algebras

According to J. Feldman and C. Moore’s wellknown theorem on Cartan subalgebras, a variant of the group measure space construction gives an equivalence of categories between twisted countable standard measured equivalence relations and Cartan pairs, i.e., a von Neumann algebra (on a separable Hilbert space) together with a Cartan subalgebra. A. Kumjian gave a C∗-algebraic analogue of this theore...
